Whether you’re looking to put your house on the market or you just want to add freshness to your home’s exterior, here are some of the easiest ways to enhance curb appeal this summer. All you need is a little energy and less than an hour, so there’s no excuse -- get started today!
New doormat
As far as home improvement projects go, this one tops the list as the easiest and quickest. Simply purchase a new doormat and place it in front of your door. For around $20 or less, you (and your visitors) will enjoy the vibrancy and cheer of a doormat that speaks to your personality. As an added bonus, you’ll also have a place to wipe your feet!
Light bulbs
Exterior lighting is easy to forget about, but it’s important. After dark, turn on porch light(s) and all other outdoor lights, then walk outside and inspect your home. Check to see that all your lights are working. Do you have any pathway or landscaping lights that need replacing? When your home is on the market, it’s especially important that all light bulbs are functioning because interested buyers often drive by to see what the home looks like at night.
Two potted plants
Adding symmetry to your entryway is an easy way to add class and curb appeal. Consider buying two identical plants in identical containers (flowers, small trees, hanging baskets, etc.) and place one on each side of the doorway or front steps. From a design perspective, symmetry creates a harmonious balance and pleases the eye. Additionally, summer is a great time to purchase plants and containers because they usually go on sale at this time.
Hang a wreath
A new wreath is the perfect way to welcome visitors and family to your home. For the crafty, there are thousands of DIY wreath ideas on blogs and home design websites that range from the simple to complex. For others, it’s fun to go to a home store and pick out a new wreath. Use your monogram, let the kids decorate it, or grab attention with a bold color-- just make sure to replace the wreath if it starts looking faded or out-of-season.
Just clean it
Elbow grease is free and it’s one of the best ways to brighten up your home. Wash all the things that get dirty and weathered (especially around the entryway) for an instant pick-me-up. Clean the front door itself (including trim) with warm soapy water to remove any scuff marks or grime. Clean the porch lights to remove spider webs, haze, and dust. Clean any steps, railings, door handles, and flooring.
You’d be surprised at how attention to small things can really spruce up your home with just a little effort (and make a big impact).
Got more time?
If you have more than one hour, some of these projects can be taken to the next level:
- Pressure wash your siding and driveway
- Replace your front door: with a steel door to possibly earn more than 100 percent return on your investment.
- Consider painting your front door gray or black, which may even help your home sell for around $6,000 more than expected?
